Customers frequently ask us if the Voltaren Gel 1% found in the USA is the same as the Voltaren Emulgel 1.16% marketed in Canada and many other countries around the world. While they are not identical, both Voltaren Gel 1% and Voltaren Emulgel 1.16% contain the same active ingredient diclofenac. Diclofenac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), which helps with conditions involving pain and swelling – such as headaches and joint pain. It has been available for years as oral Voltaren and used to treat a range of conditions. The development of topical formulations of diclofenac was due to the side effects that may be caused by orally ingested NSAIDs. In particular, NSAIDs can cause stomach upset. And, with long term use, the side effects may become more serious – heart attacks, kidney failure and gastrointestinal bleeding. Topicals have been associated with fewer of these side effects. Where the two Voltarens differ is in how the diclofenac is included in each formulation. Voltaren Emulgel contains diclofenac diethylamine 1.16% while Voltaren Gel contains diclofenac sodium 1%. Diethylamine and sodium are salts that are attached to the diclofenac molecule, which aid in its absorption. The amount of active ingredient in each product is nearly the same. In the USA, Voltaren Gel has been approved for the treatment of osteoarthritic joints such as the knees and those of the hands. Canada’s Voltaren Emulgel is indicated for the short-term treatment of soft and connective tissue injuries (muscles, ligaments and tendons). While Voltaren Emulgel is not approved for osteoarthritis, a study published in the Journal of Rhematology shows that diclofenac diethylamine (as in Voltaren Emulgel) was safe and effective for relief of symptoms of osteoarthritis of the knee. The two products have never been compared with one another in a published scientific study, but given that they contain the same active ingredient in nearly equal concentrations one might expect that they deliver similar results. If you aren’t certain that Voltaren Emulgel is right for you, we recommend that you check in with your physician to make sure. And, as with all medicines, read package directions carefully to ensure that you take as directed to help maximize its efficacy and minimize the risk for any side effects.
